WHAT DO YOU MEME ?

The History of Memes
What are memes and why have they become so popular? Memes are part of toady’s youth's everyday life, especially in terms of social media. They have become a common and popular communication tool, but the questions are why and how? How long will they remain a part of internet culture? communication, comedy/entertainment, psychology, and media influence.
Memes began as a way for people to spread culture. In his book “The Selfish Gene”, Richard Dawkins explains that the term “meme” is derived from the term “mimeme” - an ancient Greek word that is defined as “that which is imitated.” Dawkins also goes as far as relating their behavior to genes not only because the two terms sound alike, but also because of their similar behaviors. Essentially, a meme is to an idea of what a gene is to a physical trait. Memes originally served the purpose of spreading cultural ideas. However, internet memes today have evolved into something a little different. They have multiple purposes and are an integral part of modern online life. Some of the purposes may include spreading news, basic comedy, and even being used as a coping mechanism. Overall, they have created a culture of their own, hence the phrase “meme culture”.
